Duluth residents will have four sites to dispose of excess road salt and sand from sidewalks, curbs, gutters and boulevards.
Residents are encouraged to sweep up their road sand. If not picked up before spring rains, the city said in a news release, the sand washes into streams and can damage trout habitats.
The best way to dispose of it is to sweep and bring it to the four dump sites, program coordinator Chris Kleist said in the news release.
The sites - at Chester Bowl, Duluth Heights Community Club parking lot, Piedmont Community Center and Wheeler Field - have large, green roll-off dumpsters marked with a sign.
The sites will be monitored for illegal dumping. Yard waste, leaves, grass clippings and brush are to be dumped at the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District yard waste site.
Street sweepers collect road sand from the streets as quickly as possible in the spring, Kleist said, but any additional cleanup help from residents is appreciated.
