The Duluth Police Department is warning residents of a possible phone scam.

Authorities received reports this week that a Florida company is calling and asking for monetary donations for a program called "Proceed with Caution" that is supposed to give money to the families of police officers involved in fatal traffic accidents. The number showing up on caller ID is from a 727 area code, which is in Florida.

The Florida company does not represent the Duluth Police Department, officials said. Furthermore, police said that a follow-up investigation wasn't able to verify if the program exists.

Authorities warn residents to use caution when providing personal information over the phone and cautioned residents about donating to any organization that they are not familiar with.
