A Duluth man accused of sexually assaulting a pre-teen girl made his first appearance in St. Louis County District Court on Wednesday.

Jeremy Scott Wicklund, 36, is charged with first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct for allegedly engaging in sexual penetration and contact with a girl under 13 years old.

The girl told police that the assault took place about three years ago. She was afraid to report what happened, but she told a woman she knew, who called police.

Defense attorney David Malban told the court Wednesday that his client has dysfunction in his family because of alcohol and marijuana use. According to court records, Wicklund was charged in August with domestic assault. He has pleaded not guilty. A jury trial on that charge is scheduled for Nov. 20.

Wicklund is free on supervised release. His next court appearance on the sexual assault charge is Nov. 5.
