A 19-year-old man was arrested Wednesday morning for allegedly breaking into a dozen vehicles around the 700 block of West Second Street in Duluth.

Police investigated a report about 5 a.m. of a man dressed in a black hooded sweat shirt prowling around a vehicle on the 700 block of West Second Street. The person who reported it pounded on the window of her apartment, causing the man to flee on foot toward Mesaba Avenue.

Investigating officers found a man nearby who matched the description given by the woman. He was in possession of a hatchet that police said could have been used to break other vehicle windows in the area. The man identified 11 other vehicles he said he had broken into before officers located him, according to police officials.

The man was transported to the St. Louis County Jail, where he was lodged on charges of first-degree damage to property and tampering with a motor vehicle.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call the Duluth Police Department Property Crimes Unit at (218) 730-5160.
