A 40-year old Duluth man died Saturday in an ATV accident, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Department.

Martin Edward Kromschroeder was driving a three-wheel ATV in the Whiteface Reservoir area Saturday evening about 8 p.m. when he went around a curve, lost control of his ATV and hit a tree, Sergeant Grant Toma said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office but excessive speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, Toma said. It is not yet known if alcohol also played a role.

Kromschroeder was not wearing a helmet.
