A 21-year-old Duluth man remained in critical condition Monday following an accident while swimming Saturday at Island Lake.
Andrew Kerr was airlifted to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center late Saturday from the lake north of Duluth. He had been jumping on an inflatable trampoline, went underwater and didn’t resurface, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Witnesses found him underwater, pulled him to shore and started CPR, the sheriff's office said.
A CaringBridge page set up by Kerr’s family reported that he underwent surgery Sunday for a broken bone in his neck. The surgery went well and he was stable in the intensive care unit, the site reported.
Kerr, who graduated from Duluth East High School in 2013 after helping the Greyhounds reach three consecutive Class AA boys hockey state tournaments, played for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League the past two seasons.
The Dubuque Telegraph Herald, citing a family spokesperson, reported that Kerr - A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire recruit to play hockey this fall - had been awake and recognized family and friends; there was positive news but the long-term prognosis was not yet known, the paper reported.
A GoFundMe fundraising page has been set up at gofundme.com/2ezj4rrw .
Gold Cross Ambulance, the St. Louis County Rescue Squad and Life Link III air ambulance responded to the incident in addition to first responders from Normanna, Gnesen and Fredenberg townships.
