A Duluth man arrested Wednesday following a six-hour standoff with Duluth police was charged Friday.

Cody Ryan Thompson, 25, is charged with one felony count of assault and a misdemeanor count of domestic assault. Judge Sally Tarnowski set bail at $100,000.

According to the criminal complaint, the standoff at 3161 Vernon St. allegedly began after Thompson held a handgun to his girlfriend's head and prevented her from leaving with her young child or from calling 911. The woman was able to use her cell phone to send a text message to an off-duty Fond du Lac tribal police officer, who called 911.

Police went to Vernon Street about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday and established cell phone contact with Thompson's girlfriend. Thompson let the woman leave the apartment about 11:30 p.m. after he realized she had talked to the police.

The woman told police that the incident began when Thompson threaten to kill himself. The woman "at one point noticed the Defendant sitting near a bathtub with the gun in his mouth," the complaint said.

When the woman tried calling 911, Thompson pointed the gun about 2 to 3 inches from her face and ordered her off the phone. The woman told police that before leaving the apartment she was able to get the handgun away from Thompson, hiding it under a mattress and its magazine in a laundry basket.

Police were able to re-establish contract with Thompson, who surrendered at 4 a.m. Wednesday.

During the standoff, police evacuated some nearby residents and asked others to stay in their house.
