A Duluth man was charged Tuesday morning with four criminal counts stemming from a weekend car prowl.

Tyrone Nicholas St. Germaine, 22, was charged with one count each of criminal damage to property, theft, possession of stolen property and tampering with a motor vehicle. The first is a gross misdemeanor; the others misdemeanors.

District Judge Eric Hylden set bail at $1,000.

St. Germaine's next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 15.

According to Duluth police, an officer spotted St. Germaine holding a car stereo and standing near two vehicles that had passenger doors open and dome lights on in the 400 block alley of East Seventh Street shortly before midnight on Saturday.

Officers checked the two vehicles and found that both had their rear passenger windows broken out, and one was missing its stereo.

A search of Minnesota court records found nine cases against St. Germaine, mostly for traffic matters.

Police remind people to take the following measures to help prevent vehicle prowls:

Never leave valuables in view.

Never leave credit cards, identification or personal information in the vehicle.

Put any valuables that must be left in the vehicle in the trunk or out of sight before arriving at your destination.

Always lock the vehicle with the windows rolled up.

If the vehicle has an alarm, turn it on.
