The Duluth Public Library will soon be getting about 70 computers from the Gates Foundation, thanks to a matching grant from the Knight Foundation.
The Gates Foundation pledged to give the library $82,000 toward computers and training, but only if it was matched by at least $50,000. The city announced this week that the Knight Foundation will give $160,000 to the city, which will buy 50 computers and 21 laptops for use at all three library branches, according to library manager Carla Powers.
The city will hire a part-time trainer to teach people to use the computers for two years, Powers said.
"We want people to be able to use the computers to their full potential," Powers said.
Money that had been raised locally to match the grant will also go toward the computers.
