Duluth holds a large lead over Asheville, N.C., in the latest round of voting in Outside magazine’s annual “best outdoors towns” competition.
As of mid-morning Friday - midway through Round 5 - Duluth had about 20,250 votes to about 7.400 for Asheville. Voting closes at 10:59 p.m. Sunday.
If Duluth advances to the final round against the other Round 5 winner - Provo, Utah, or Ithaca, N.Y. - there will be a seven-day voting period ending June 15.
Duluth beat Columbia, Mo.; Athens, Ohio; La Crosse, Wis.; and then Minneapolis in head-to-head competition in the first four rounds of the contest. The city's outdoor assets are being touted by an active social media campaign, with a “VoteDuluth” tag being used on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
