At least two families from the Hermantown Community Church will travel to Laurel, Miss., over Christmas to help re-roof storm-damaged homes.
To help pay for the trip, a spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church at 4880 Maple Grove Road. All proceeds will be used to finance the trip and to purchase roofing materials.
Michael Bruley said the volunteer families hope to re-roof at least three homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina, which hit Gulf Coast states in August 2005.
"There are people, even a year later, who still have the blue tarps on their roofs because they were underinsured or had no insurance," Bruley said. "One family we are really hoping to help out is a single mom with two kids, and her mom and grandmom live with her and she works at a convenience store. She can't really afford to do this.
"This is our Christmas present to these people," he said.

The idea for the trip grew out of a local presentation by a Laurel, Miss., church that Bruley saw.
In addition to raising money for this trip, Sunday's spaghetti dinner will include a display with information on the conditions in southern Mississippi and other area church groups organizing to go to Mississippi throughout the coming year.
