The Duluth Democratic Farmer Labor party is considering whether to endorse a mayoral candidate at its convention after the Sept. 11 primary.

The next convention is scheduled for Sept. 25 and will include endorsements for School Board candidates. In April, the Duluth DFL failed to back what was then a small field of candidates for mayor. Now there are 12 people in that race.

A DFL endorsement can be very desirable in this heavily Democratic town. And the local party has a network of dedicated volunteers and resources to educate the public about its candidates.

The DFL endorsed incumbents 1st District City Councilor Laurie Johnson and 5th District Councilor Russ Stover. They also endorsed Sharla Gardner for the 3rd District seat that Russ Stewart will vacate this year as well as newcomers Jeff Anderson and Tony Cuneo for the two At Large seats that are up for grabs.

The Sept. 25 convention also may reconsider an endorsement in the mayor's race after the primary.
