The Duluth City Council voted 6 to 2 tonight to vacate a street near Denfeld High School to make way for the school district's long range facilities plan.
While the vote was the first for the council on an issue involving the red plan, even councilors voting for the vacation noted it didn't indicate support for the plan.
"God knows I have problems with it," said Councilor Sharla Gardner, but she noted that the street vacation would help improve safety in the neighborhood.
Councilor Todd Fedora also approved the vacation, but noted, "if anybody thinks there's going to be a pattern in regards to this city councilor's attitude toward the red plan, they're mistaken."
The council learned that it will have several opportunities to vote on facets of the red plan during a committee of the whole meeting held Monday night, including more street vacations, easements and permits.

The city said it will also require an environmental assessment worksheet for some of the facets of the red plan, including if the district needs to disturb an eagle's nest near the proposed Ordean High School, according to an e-mail sent by the city planning office.
