Duluth City Council rejects red plan vote

What happened: A proposal to have the community vote on the Duluth school district's long-range facilities plan was rejected 5-3 Monday by the City Council.

How it came up: Councilor Jim Stauber said he wanted to know from the public whether the council and other city government bodies should support initiatives from the school district to help implement the long-range facilities plan. Some of the plan's projects will require variances and other approvals from the City Council.

What they said: "I think it's important that we make decisions based on what the community wants, not what we think is best for the community," Stauber said.

Opposing councilors argued that the proposal was too broad, while others said it's too late to stop the red plan, and it's up to the council to make it the best plan possible.

"We need to make lemonade out of lemons," Councilor Todd Fedora said.
