Duluth attractions to offer free events and activities

Members of the Duluth tourism industry, in partnership with Visit Duluth and the city of Duluth, are offering a series of "Community Days" that will provide free admission and other special offers to tourist attractions in the area.

Members of the Duluth tourism industry, in partnership with Visit Duluth and the city of Duluth, are offering a series of "Community Days" that will provide free admission and other special offers to tourist attractions in the area.

"The goal is to ensure everyone has the opportunity to benefit from the industry that our community invests in through tourism tax," Duluth Mayor Emily Larson said in a news release. "Whether you live here, work here or both - we are proud to showcase some of the best Duluth has to offer."

The free events planned so far include:

  • Monday at the Great Lakes Aquarium - free admission and parking for all Duluth residents and college students from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday at the Duluth Depot - free museum admission, including the World of Giant Insects and Erie Mining exhibits, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Clean and Safe Team members from the Duluth Downtown Waterfront District/Greater Downtown Council will be providing free face-painting and balloon animals.
  • Wednesday at Lake Superior Zoo - free admission from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first 1,000 people to visit that day will receive a free hot dog lunch and refreshments, and the first 300 children will receive a free T-shirt.
  • May 23, Duluth Sister Cities International - learn more about what the organization brings to the Duluth community. Visit the office at 301 W. First St., Suite 308, from noon to 8 p.m. for a chance to meet staff and board members, and learn about events planned for 2018.
  • May 24 at Glensheen - free Classic Tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets given on a first-come, first-served basis. Early arrival suggested as capacity may be reached.
  • May 24 at Spirit Mountain Adventure Park - complimentary rides on the Timber Cruiser Alpine Coaster, Timber Flyer Zipline, Jumping Pillow and Mini Golf from 4-8 p.m.
  • Aug. 3 at the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad - free rail excursion along the St. Louis River, departing from Munger Landing at the foot of Clyde Avenue beginning at 5:30 p.m.
