Dan Woods got a firsthand perspective of the care provided at the Lake Superior Community Health Center as he filmed a 12-minute documentary: "Sick, Scared and Uninsured."

Woods, 59, built a career as a filmmaker shooting commercials and corporate videos, but decided he wanted to turn his attention to documentaries. He wanted one of his first projects to be about the plight of the uninsured and found the Health Center gave him access to that world.

He shadowed doctors and staff members at the center for about a month and a half before starting to film in June, primarily following four patients at the center.

"It turned me on to a lot of realities," he said. "The experience shows the issues going on in America and how the health-care safety net has big holes in it."

The finished movie is a 12-minute testimonial to the center's effect on patients and the community that will appear on the center's Web site, www.lschc.org , by Dec. 4.

Woods said he hopes it's a door to finding money to make a longer documentary on the uninsured.

"I'd like to do a deeper, longer version of the 12-minute piece," he said. "When you don't have insurance, it shapes your whole life."
