The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is seeking public comments on an environmental assessment worksheet for the proposed 483-acre expansion of U.S. Steel's open pit Minntac taconite mine in Mountain Iron.
The mine extension project will extend mine life and taconite production to 2031. Taconite produced from the extension will continue to be processed at the existing Minntac facility at the current levels of production.
The DNR will accept comments on the environmental review through Sept. 5. until 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 5. Written comments should be sent to: Lisa Fay, DNR Ecological and Water Resources Division, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55155-4025. E-mail comments may be sent to
environmentalrev.dnr@state.mn.us . E-mail comments should include "Minntac EAW" in the subject line and provide a name and mailing address so that future notices and documents can be provided. Comments also can be faxed to (651) 297-1500.
