Diver, Smith advance in tribal chairman race

Karen R. Diver and Clarence "Chuck" Smith will face each other in the January 30th general election for Fond du Lac Reservation Business Committee chairman after receiving the most votes in Tuesday's ten-way primary election.

Diver received 273 votes, Smith 197, Andrew D. DePoe 14, Charlin F. Diver 104, Shawn Ammesmaki 38, Wayne Dupuis 137, Ricky W. DeFoe 37, Raymond W. Bellair (Smith) 58, William L. DuFault, Sr. 21, and Carol Renee (Abramowski) Jurek 41.

The winner in January's election will fill the unexpired term of Peter Defoe, who resigned as chairman on Sept. 11. Since Defoe's resignation, Vice Chairman V.R. "Butch" Martineau has filled the position.

Martineau faces Sandra M. Shabiash in a general election Tuesday for the RBC District II seat. Voting will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the new Sawyer Community Center. The tribal center and all programs will be closed for the election.
