Sitting in his new motorized scooter Saturday, Warren Scott St. John rolled outside onto his home's new access ramp and for the first time was able to see the work dozens of volunteers have done on his behalf the past few days.
The ramp wasn't quite finished, and St. John still was getting used to operating his new ride, but there was no doubt that the improvements will be life-changing for the disabled Vietnam War veteran and his family.
As reported in Friday's News Tribune, St. John and his wife were facing a host of must-do home repairs that were beyond their ability, and he had to rely on his son to carry him in and out of his house.
A crew of volunteers -- fellow vets, Home Depot employees and others --started working on the home last week with materials donated by local businesses. Now, the home has new siding and windows, among other improvements. A new flagpole and small garden are in place out front. There's the new ramp, and -- presented as a surprise Saturday -- St. John's new scooter, provided by Disabled American Veterans.
There's still work to be done, and volunteers are welcome today beginning about 8 a.m. -- just go to 31 Juniper in the Zenith Terrace mobile home park, near the corner of U.S. Highway 2 and Boundary Avenue.
