Deerwood lumber plant to close

Because of reduced demand, Weyerhaeuser Co. will indefinitely curtail production at its Deerwood plant, which makes laminated strand lumber, the company announced Friday.

Because of reduced demand, Weyerhaeuser Co. will indefinitely curtail production at its Deerwood plant, which makes laminated strand lumber, the company announced Friday.

The plant, which employs 158, will be closed before the end of the year, according to a company statement.

The plant will be mothballed, but it will be headed and the equipment will be maintained, company spokesman Frank Mendizabal said. If markets dramatically improve, Weyerhaeuser might restart or sell it, he added.

In addition to the Deerwood plant, two Weyerhaeuser oriented strand board plants in Canada also are having production indefinitely curtailed.

Reduced housing construction in North American has shrunk demand for wood products, Weyerhaeuser Chairman Steven Rogel said in a statement. "This move enables our remaining plants to better execute our customer strategies."
