A woman charged with swindling $5,700 from a Minnesota Department of Motor Vehicles office in Grand Rapids pleaded guilty to the crime Monday in Itasca County District Court.
County Attorney John Muhar said Crystal Marie Wilson, 31, of Deer River will be sentenced for the felony crime at a hearing Sept. 10.
Wilson was charged this spring for taking money for automobile titles but never processing them. The transactions were for local car dealerships. A co-worker reported in March, after Wilson no longer worked at the state office, that when the dealerships sent a batch of titles to be processed, Wilson didn't process some and pocketed the cash on three occasions.
State statute outlines a maximum sentence of 10 years and a possible $20,000 fine for felony theft by swindle.
