Minnesota recorded the lowest number of fire related deaths for a one-year period in 2005, according to the latest edition of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshal Division report.
The report, now available online, provides 2005 and historical data on fire incidents, including types, numbers and locations of fires, causes, casualties, and a breakout section of arson statistics. Its information is based on data reported by 750 of fire departments.
A few highlights from the 2005 report:
40 people were killed by fires last year -- a record low rate to date in Minnesota. The deaths included one in Two Harbors, one in Hermantown, and one in Cass Lake.
On average, a fire department responded to a call every three minutes.

Cooking, open flame and heating were the leading causes of fire.
Fire destroyed more than $160 million worth of property.
