The St. Louis County Auditor’s Office is reminding homeowners and renters that Aug. 15 is the deadline to file for a Minnesota property tax refund for 2015.
According to the state Department of Revenue, more than 850,000 Minnesotans received a total of $645 million in property tax refunds last year. That averaged out to $840 for homeowners and $635 for renters.
The deadline for 2016 property tax refund is one year from now.
To be eligible for a refund, a homeowner must have had a household income of less than $107,930 in 2015. For renters, the income limit in 2015 is $58,490.
“Property tax refunds are handled by the state, however we think it's important to remind our citizens that this money is out there for them," said Don Dicklich, St. Louis County auditor. “The county is responsible for collecting property taxes, but we also want to make sure people are aware of this opportunity for some real property tax relief."
Forms, instructions and additional eligibility requirements can be found on the Department of Revenue's website,
