Fourth Street has been closed between 22nd and 23rd Avenues East after a brick-arched culvert underneath the street gave way late Thursday afternoon.
The culvert conveys Oregon Creek at a depth of 33 feet underneath Fourth Street and is believed to be at least 80 years old. The degradation of surrounding soil is believed to be a contributing factor in the collapse, which also sank portions of the street above.
In addition, a sanitary sewer line near the culvert broke as a result of the collapse. Engineers are working to shut down the sewer line and redirect its flow while repairs on the street are planned.
Engineers are working on a repair plan and will work through the weekend to expedite repairs. No timeline has been set for the repair process.
