A 20-year-old Duluth man was arrested early Monday after St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office deputies said he led them on a pursuit through Canal Park.
The man was observed driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that had been reported stolen during a burglary Sept. 18 in Fargo, North Dakota, a sheriff’s office news release said Monday.
A deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly fled.
Pursuing authorities were cautioned the driver of the stolen truck may also be armed due to suspected involvement in a vehicle prowl, in a neighboring jurisdiction, in which a handgun was stolen.
The deputy used a pursuit intervention technique to end the chase, and the man was apprehended on the 800 block of West Railroad Street. The incident took place around 12:30 a.m. Monday.
Deputies took the man into custody without incident, and he was being held in St Louis County Jail on Monday pending felony charges related to assault, damage to property, fleeing an officer and stolen property.
The News Tribune generally does not identify suspects until they have been formally charged.
The incident remains under investigation by several law enforcement agencies in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota.
According to Duluth police Monday, the city has experienced 223 motor vehicle thefts so far in 2021. Last year, the city had 236 reported such thefts, up from 212 in 2019.
