A Superior gymnastics coach accused of sexually assaulting two teenage students made his initial appearance Wednesday, May 5, in Douglas County Circuit Court.
George Francis Deppa, 47, of Superior, faces two counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child under 16 years of age and one count of exposing genitals, pubic area or intimate parts to a child.
A cash bond of $50,000 was set for Deppa and he was ordered to have no contact with the reported victims, no intentional contact with minors and not to use or possess alcohol.
Deppa is a coach at Twin Ports Gymnastics in Superior; none of the alleged incidents took place at the center.
Deppa reportedly took minors out for rides in his boat and invited them to numerous sleepovers at his Superior home, according to the complaint. The reported victims told investigators that Deppa touched them sexually and tried to “make out” with them. One victim reported that Deppa asked her to touch him and to send him nude pictures of herself, but she refused.
The victim also said Deppa would give the girls cigarettes and drinks on his boat. He reportedly gave the victims gifts to keep quiet about the incidents.
When questioned by investigators, Deppa said he was aware that he was accused of making someone uncomfortable, but he couldn’t think of a reason why, the complaint read. He said the victims may have been uncomfortable with things he said, like telling them they’re cute. He told investigators he contacted the girls over the Google Duo video chat app to apologize and “thought it was all done.”
The sexual assault charges are Class C felonies punishable by up to 40 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $100,000. Deppa’s next court appearance was set for Wednesday, May 12.
