A Duluth man was charged with two counts of first-degree arson after a trailer home and camper were destroyed in a fire on Monday in Grand Lake Township.
Around 6:15 a.m. Monday, James Phillip Shelton, 53, was found by his sister's boyfriend holding a stick on fire next to a burning snowmobile on the 6000th block of Beckman Road, according to a criminal complaint.
The witness went back inside to call 911 and to grab a fire extinguisher. When he returned the trailer home and camper were also on fire. Shelton was found in the woods nearly 30 minutes after law enforcement arrived, the complaint said.
The witness told police that Shelton, who suffers from a traumatic brain injury and lived in a camper on his property, started acting strange the day before, the complaint stated.
Shelton's first court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Fire damage is estimated to be $15,000.
