Eveleth woman convicted in fatal crash

An Eveleth woman will serve one year of probation and pay a $500 fine in connection with the crash that killed a well-known Iron Range car dealer last summer.

A St. Louis County jury on Thursday convicted Niomi Cheyenne Boulanger, 20, on misdemeanor charges of failure to yield and driving without insurance in the August collision that killed 60-year-old Donald Hilligoss of Cohasset. She was acquitted on another misdemeanor count of careless driving.

Authorities said Hilligoss was riding his motorcycle west on Minnesota Highway 37 when Boulanger, traveling in the opposite direction, turned in front of him. His motorcycle struck the front of her Hyundai Sonata, throwing him a significant distance, according to a criminal complaint.

Sixth Judicial District Judge Robert Friday stayed a 90-day jail sentence for one year of unsupervised probation and ordered Boulanger to pay the fine and write a letter of apology.
