Cloquet woman finds wanted suspect in basement
A Cloquet woman who reported hearing “strange sounds” in her basement last week discovered a home intruder who was wanted by police after a domestic incident, authorities said.
Kent David Olson, 46, reportedly grabbed the woman by the arm, telling her that he was cold and had been there all afternoon. He then brandished a knife, stole the victim’s cellphone and left, according to the Cloquet Police Department.
Authorities said the incident was reported on Jan. 4 at a residence on the 300 block of 14th Street. Earlier that day, police had requested charges against Olson stemming from a domestic dispute at a residence on 10th Street.
The woman reportedly told police that she and her husband heard noises in the basement, but it wasn’t until later in the evening that she went downstairs. Olson allegedly demanded a ride, but she informed him that her husband was gone with their only vehicle.
After displaying a knife and taking the woman’s phone, Olson left after about 20 minutes. He was arrested the next day at Black Bear Casino and Resort, still carrying a phone matching the description given by the victim.
Olson was arraigned this week on felony charges including first-degree burglary and possession of tear gas or stun gun by a felon, as well as a series of drug-related offenses.
