GRAND FORKS — A Grand Forks man will spend 25 years behind bars for raping and strangling a woman in April 2018.
Orlando Joseph Brown appeared in court for sentencing Monday, June 17. A jury found him guilty of two counts of gross sexual imposition and aggravated assault in February. The charges qualify for North Dakota’s Rule of 85 and Brown is required to serve 85% of his sentence, over 23 years, before he is eligible for parole.
Jurors heard testimony from the victim, Brown and first responders during the three-day trial.
The victim reported Brown had beat, strangled and held her down with one arm while he raped her. A nurse testified that her injuries were consistent with the reported assaults.
A detective testified that Brown denied allegations during an interview but changed his story after he found out the woman had completed a sexual assault exam.
Each gross sexual imposition charge held a minimum of 20 years in prison and a maximum of life without parole. Brown has been incarcerated for over a year, and that time will count toward his sentence. He’ll be on probation for five years after he’s released and will be required to register as a sex offender.
