Authorities in Cass County rescued two people from a pickup truck that broke through ice and slush on Leech Lake on Friday morning.
The Cass County Sheriff's Office reported that deputies responded to the call near Sand Point on the western side of the lake just before 8 a.m. A full-size pickup truck had partially broke through the lake ice in the vicinity of an ice heave, and two people were in the bed of the truck. They were uninjured, but unable to safely get away from the truck because of thin ice.
The Walker Fire Department used a hovercraft to rescue the two people.
Authorities warned anglers and others heading out on northern Minnesota lakes that - despite the recent cold weather - there remain areas of thin ice near ice heaves, rivers and springs. Anyone choosing to venture out on a frozen lake should use caution and take safety measures, such as wearing a life vest under winter gear or carrying ice picks
