The Superior Fire Department fought a large fire Wednesday night at the Superior Landfill on Moccasin Mike Road.

Several engines responded to the blaze, which could be seen for miles as a plume of black smoke rose over Lake Superior. A Superior Telegram photographer on the scene reported hearing a series of small explosions or "pops" coming from the fire.

"The fire is being contained with water located on site which is per the pre-plan," Superior Fire Chief Scott Gordon said in a statement. "Heavy equipment operators from the city of Superior are responding to position the burning garbage in a strategic way while the fire crews will cover them with water supplies."

Gordon said the landfill has seen similar fires before. He predicted it would take a few hours to extinguish, and in the meantime, off-duty firefighters were at the stations to ensure coverage for 911 calls.
