The Proctor School Board ended up looking northward to fill its upcoming superintendent vacancy.

Superintendent Diane Rauschenfels is retiring after five years in the position. On Monday night, the board unanimously selected John Engelking, who is the middle and high schools principal at the Cook County Schools.

"He seemed to have a very good working relationship with his staff," board vice-chair Larry Shelton said. "From the superintendent to the janitors, everyone talked very highly of him."

Shelton said board members also admired Engelking's ability to draw together staff and students from many backgrounds "and make them all come together to work for one purpose," he said. "I admire him for that."

Shelton said he plans to meet with Engelking on Monday to work out the contract details. He expects to offer Engelking a three-year contract, and said they haven't talked about an annual salary yet.
