A wind-chill warning and extreme cold have cancelled classes in all Duluth, Superior, Hermantown, Proctor, Esko, Two Harbors and Cloquet schools, as well as many other districts.
The National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a wind-chill warning through noon Friday. The temperatue at 6 a.m. Thursday was 23 below in Duluth. Wind-chill readings were dipping to 50 below. The high temperature today is expected to be only 2 below zero, with wind-chill readings of 35 below.
"Given those levels, we felt the most responsible thing to do would be to call off school," Duluth Superintendent Keith Dixon said.
Other area schools that have announced closures include: Grand Rapids, Hibbing, Maple, Solon Springs and Virginia. Aitkin schools will be two hours late.
