Coast Guard rescues two from sailboat that ran aground in Apostle Islands

Two people were rescued from a sailboat that ran aground early Sunday morning on Lake Superior in the Apostle Islands.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported that it received a distress call via VHF channel 16 at about 2 a.m. Sunday. The captain of a 38-foot sailboat reported that the vessel’s anchor had dragged and that the boat had drifted aground near Oak Island, about 10 miles northeast of Bayfield.
The Coast Guard launched a 45-foot response boat from its station in Bayfield, and asked the stranded boaters to launch flares to guide rescuers in the foggy conditions. The rescue crew arrived at the stranded vessel at about 3 a.m. and brought the two boaters aboard the Coast Guard boat; the stranded sailboat was left to be salvaged later in the day.
A commercial salvage company retrieved the vessel later Sunday, the Coast Guard reported, and towed it to Apostle Islands Marina in Bayfield for repairs.
There were no injuries or pollution reported from the grounding, the Coast Guard said. The names of the boaters were not released.
