A 55-year-old man was rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew after being reported missing in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula on Saturday night.

The Coast Guard reported that it received a report at 10:30 p.m. of an overdue hiker in the state park, located along the shore of Lake Superior northeast of Ironwood. The hiker reportedly had been dropped off at a trailhead at about noon with plans to return there at 6 p.m., but he failed to arrive. Attempts to reach him by cell phone were unsuccessful. Michigan State Police initiated a search in the rugged terrain of the park, and later requested federal assistance.

A Coast Guard crew from Traverse City, Mich., responded aboard a Dolphin helicopter. They spotted the missing hiker, who had built a fire and signaled the helicopter using a flashlight. The Coast Guard reported that he was hoisted aboard the helicopter and transported to a nearby airport, where he was reunited with his family.

The hiker was not injured. His name and hometown were not released.
