The U.S. Coast Guard announced Friday it has begun icebreaking operations on the Great Lakes.

In what it calls Operation Taconite, the Coast Guard will have icebreakers on patrol on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, the St. Mary's River and the Straits of Mackinac.

Colder weather and the anticipated closure of the Soo Locks before midnight on Monday prompted the move.
