The Canadian National Railway is contributing $100,000 to help breathe new life into a recreation center serving the Gary-New Duluth neighborhood.
Mark Boben, who has helped spearhead fundraising efforts for the project, expects a new water line and fire hydrant to be installed to serve the center this week. He estimates that in-kind contributions and gifts of cash from individuals and area companies have moved the project about a quarter of the way toward its $2 million goal.
Boben hopes work on the community center will be sufficiently complete to get it up and running by June of next year, so it can provide summer programming. Additional amenities could follow, including a dog park, a pleasure ice skating area, soccer fields, a picnic area, a skateboard park, a multipurpose court, a community garden and a disc golf course.
Contributions to the Gary-New Duluth Recreation Area Project can be sent to Park State Bank, 2630 W. Superior St., Duluth, MN 55806.
