The Clyde Park Redevelopment Project and the Duluth Heritage Sports Center will receive a special award from the Economic Development Association of Minnesota on Wednesday evening.
The project will receive an "Eddie" award for overall excellence in redevelopment. Earlier this year, Phase I of the project was completed, with the private Clyde Redevelopment project scheduled for completion next spring.
"This is a tremendous honor for a project that is a shining example of community collaboration," Mayor Don Ness said. "I congratulate everyone who has been involved in this project and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project this fall."
Phase I of construction built the Heritage Hall, the 1,200-seat Heritage Arena and an expansion for the Boys and Girls Club of Duluth. Phase II construction calls for a multi-sport fieldhouse known as Heritage Pavilion, a marketplace, indoor soccer facility, hotel, sports training center, wellness center and the new home of the Duluth Children's Museum.
"It has been a long process to get Phase I built but now that the full development is nearing completion we're just getting more and more excited at the prospects," said developer Alessandro Giuliani, who will accept the award from EDAM. "We have the capacity to host more and bigger tournaments, we've removed a significant blight from one of the most visible locations in the city, and we'll add to the tourism tax base of the city through the hotel and expanded tournaments. It's spectacular growth and we couldn't be happier."
