Major power outages struck parts of western Duluth, Hermantown and Cloquet on Monday, leaving more than 8,000 Minnesota Power customers without power for parts of the day.
The first outage occurred in western Duluth neighborhoods and Hermantown and affected more than 5,500 customers, said Amy Rutledge, Minnesota Power spokeswoman. Most of those customers had power restored within 45 minutes and the rest were restored by 2 p.m.
In that case a piece of equipment malfunctioned, possibly due to weather, Rutledge said.
In Cloquet, a vehicle left the road and hit an electric pole on Monday afternoon. During efforts to fix that, another problem occurred, cutting electricity to more than 3,100 customers. Most of those customers had power restored by 1:45 p.m.
Another outage on Monday afternoon affected the Garfield Avenue area of the Duluth waterfront.
