City of Duluth Chief Administrative Officer Mark Winson, speaking on behalf of Mayor Bergson, had the following to say about Friday's base closure announcement by the Department of Defense. The announcement outlined a plan to close the Duluth Naval Reserve Center:

"We are disturbed to hear of this morning's announcement regarding the potential closure of the Duluth Naval Reserve Center.

"It is important to remember that we are early in the base closure process and it could be up to a year before a final decision is made. We consider the Naval Reserve Center an important element of our city and will work with our elected officials and the Department of Defense to keep the center here.

"We are pleased to hear that other Duluth military installations, including the 148th Fighter Wing, appear to be unaffected. We also plan to work with our representatives to remind them of the importance of these vital facilities to our city now and into the future."
