The city of Duluth has postponed its original July 27 deadline for residents of the Seaway Hotel to vacate the building.

They now have until the end of the month to find a new place to stay.

The hotel at 2001 W. Superior St. was condemned following a July 3 inspection, where extensive water damage was documented, according to Keith Hamre, director of planning and construction services. He said the building has had a leaky roof for about two years, and mold problems have developed as a result of repeatedly delayed repairs.

The city is moving to close down the building in light of health concerns.

The hotel, which operates mainly as a boarding house, is home to 74 people, according to a desk clerk at the business.

Hamre said the city recognizes that finding new accommodations before the end of the month could be a challenge and therefore delayed the deadline for moving by an additional four days. Hamre said local agencies will be meeting this week to discuss how they can help Seaway residents make the transition to new housing.

Peter Passi covers city government for the Duluth News Tribune. He joined the paper in April 2000, initially as a business reporter but has worked a number of beats through the years.
