JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- Officials here are crediting a 3½-year-old boy with saving his mother and grandmother from an early morning apartment fire.

Jamestown Fire Chief Jim Reuther said the child was in the bedroom where the fire began and warned his mother before going upstairs to another apartment in the same building to alert his grandmother. The mother and grandmother then alerted other tenants of the building about the fire.

"His mother said, 'My son saved my life and everyone else's in the building,'" Reuther said. "Basically the child saved their lives."

The mother and son, who have not been identified by police, were transported to the hospital and released this morning.

Thirty-one firefighters were on the scene from 7:06 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. Reuther said the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, although the investigation continues and centers on either an unattended candle or an electrical cord.
