Synopsis: "Boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, consequences ensue," Burkett said with a laugh. "Musical plots -- they're not too thick." Billy Bigelow, a carnival barker, and Julie Jordan fall in love at a carnival stop in Maine. They lose their jobs and try to keep their relationship together against the odds. "It's a snapshot of how people lived at the turn of the 19th century. We find that their lives were more complicated."

What interested you in directing this play? "I really appreciate the character development in this musical. There are characters with so much texture and so much life."

Scene we won't forget: "The moment you watch them fall in love, Billy and Julie. It's very simple -- I'm a less-is-more director -- and we don't overplay it. We just allowed it to happen the way things might happen in our lives."

Performances: 7:30 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday as well as 2 p.m. Sunday in the theater, 506 W. Michigan St. Continues next Thursday through Sunday. Tickets are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors, $13 for students and $8 for ages 11 and younger.
