Caroline Congdon Gerber, a member of Duluth's famous Congdon family, died in California on Tuesday. She was 82.
Gerber was born in Duluth to Walter and Jessie Congdon. Mining and lumber baron Chester Congdon and his wife, Clara Bannister, who together had Glensheen Mansion built, were her grandparents. Elisabeth Congdon, whose 1977 murder and that of her nurse, Velma Pietila, shocked Duluth, was her aunt.
Caroline married Robert Gerber in 1944 and worked as a nanny in La Jolla, Calif., while her husband served in the Navy. After World War II, Caroline and Robert Gerber returned to Duluth and had three daughters.
In 1957, the couple moved back to California.
Gerber is remembered as a lover of music and theater and an avid puzzle solver.
