ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Senior captains Justine Axtell and Katie Winkelman made key shots late in the second half to lead Minnesota Duluth past St. Cloud State 66-61 in a North Central Conference women's basketball game Saturday before 2,206 fans at Halenbeck Hall.
Winkelman had 11 points, including consecutive 3-pointers, to put UMD ahead with four minutes left, and Axtell finished with 13 points, including a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left, to put UMD ahead 64-59.
"That is why they are senior captains," said UMD coach Dave Stromme. "They made shots when we needed them most."
St. Cloud State forward and Duluth native Erika Quigley had 32 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks.
"We had good looks at the basket, but Quigley alters and contends lots of shots," Stromme said. "She played real well."
