Bygones: Headlines from 100 years ago

Due to restricted access to the Duluth Public Library's microfilm during the COVID-19 pandemic, Bygones will temporarily cover articles from the Duluth newspapers from 100 years ago, which are available online.

  • From today through June 27, Duluth will be host to ten conventions with a total of 15,000 participants. The largest convention, with about 3,000 people, will be the Norwegian Saengerfest, a gathering of Norwegian Lutheran singers, which will be held from June 25-27.
  • The Duluth City Council yesterday unanimously adopted a proposition by the Duluth-Edison Electric Co. to install free of charge a street lighting system in the West End. Lights will be installed on the standards now in use between 18th and 22nd avenues west.
  • The old tower clock in the belfry at Duluth Central High School, which has been working for 30 years, will be given a thorough overhaul this summer. The Board of Education last night approved $125 for the work.
  • The Miller Trunk Highway has been closed because of a paving project, and drivers are encouraged to use the Vermilion Trail instead. The Vermilion detour, which has been repaired by the county, is now in passable condition according to R.W. Acton, county engineer of roads.
