* The number of ocean-going vessels plying the Great Lakes this season numbered 327 on Sept. 7, fewer than half of the number from a year ago. Grain shipping is down from 14.6 million tons a year ago to 9.5 million tons this year.
* Work is progressing on a $4.2 million meal-handling facility that will be part of a new grain terminal planned for the Duluth port by Cargill Inc. The facility is expected to be in service late in the next shipping season.

* A group called Minnesotans for Term Limits is expected to submit a petition with 4,200 signatures to the Duluth city clerk today. The petition asks the Charter Commission and the City Council to put a proposal for term limits on the Nov. 8 ballot.
* Owners of Superior’s Old Post Office building told Mayor Herb Bergson yesterday that they plan to develop the building for private use. The city had been considering moving some city offices into the vacant downtown historic landmark.
