  • Militant Indians occupying Wounded Knee, S.D., on the Pine Ridge Reservation yesterday booed a new government proposal asking them to lay down their arms and submit peacefully to arrest. Leaders of the American Indian Movement have occupied the town since Feb. 27.
  • The general level of air pollution in Duluth during February rose slightly over January's mark. Results from the 11 sampling stations were higher than last month, but officials pointed out only four of them had exceeded air-quality standards.

  • Greg Braxton-Brown was named yesterday to the post of president of the Arrowhead Community College system. Braxton-Brown, who will oversee community colleges in Hibbing, Virginia, Grand Rapids, International Falls, Ely, Cloquet and Duluth, succeeds Phillip Anderson, who left in September.
  • The Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board announced yesterday that ownership of Virginia's Coates Hotel will be returned to the board. William Papaik of G&L Management bought the hotel from the board in 1990.
