* An explosion and fire yesterday destroyed the Central Auto Parts building at 915 E. Superior St. in Duluth. Exploding fragments cracked windows at Ray Thompson Interiors and broke a large plate-glass window in the Milk House across the street.
* Ryan Construction of Minneapolis has embarked on an extensive residential construction project in Hibbing to meet housing needs of taconite plant employees. Company officials said yesterday 111 new single-family homes will be built on a 50-acre site in Stuntz Township.

* The Duluth City Council yesterday approved additional language for the ballot question on creating a special assessment district for the outlet mall project at Bayfront Park. Opponents of the project say the added text may just confuse voters further.
* A recount yesterday of votes on the $10.6 million school bond initiative in Grand Rapids determined the referendum lost by 21 votes, 2,404 to 2,382. The original count from last week’s election had the referendum losing by 24 votes.
